Antique Quilts from Show and Tell

The applique stitching is amazing

It's dated in the quilting and in cross stitch.

It was made by an ancestor in Pennsylvania and descended in the family to Marj's cousin.

Sara C brought a most interesting silk top to the July meeting. It looks to be pieced of striped silks that were left overs from a necktie company.

They are string pieced to cotton backings. That red and black print looks to be about 1880-1900,

which is when silk quilts were very popular.

 Susan F brought one her grandmother had made.

Spencer Collaborative Quilt

Douglass’ Kansas Color Light Artillery Battery (Union) Soldiers

In spring 2011, quilt artist Marla Jackson worked with ninth-graders to create a quilt picturing a group of soldiers from the first infantry of African American troops during the Civil War.

The quilt is featured in an exhibition called The First Colored Troops of Kansas at the Spencer Museum of Art in Lawrence. Several of Jackson's quilts will also be on display in the Lobby Gallery until September 18, 2011.

Fantasy Flower Garden Block of the Month

Liz Campbell is doing our 2011-12 Block of the Month. She's giving directions for fusible applique using the machine so if you've wanted to learn more about this technique this is the perfect place to start.

Ruth Powers won two Viewer's Choice Awards at the April quilt show.
Just Dandy won for the Small/Wall Quilt category.

And Spring Encounter won for the Lap/Crib quilt (which Janice says probably should have been labeled medium-size quilt)
