New Book: Emporia Rose by Brackman & Menaugh

Barbara & Karla have a new book coming out in June, 2014

Emporia Rose:
Applique Quilts

The book is based on a sampler of designs popular in Emporia
in the 1930s with Rose Kretsinger, Charlotte Whitehill and others.

The sampler Emporia Rose features six blocks
and a border of feathers.

Karla and the cover quilt Pennsylvania Beauty

There are directions for full size quilts,
wall quilts

and small projects like this table runner

and wool pincushions.

Plus a little Kansas history. Here's Emporia a century ago.

Karla's mom made a sampler in red and green

Darke County Sampler Block 5

Block 5
Pets

This month you get a cat and a chicken.
Georgann made two 9" finished blocks
but you can do them as one 9" x 18" finished rectangle.

Cats and dogs and other barnyard animals are not too
common on these Ohio samplers but it is always fun to find one.

Cats on quilts sometimes sit on their tails

"Old Tom" from the Peter Shank quilt in Sue Cummings's book

This top in the Quilt Complex collection
has two cats and a bird.
You often see butterflies too.

Cats and birds
Butterflies and Roosters.
It's a peaceable kingdom.
