Spencer Collaborative Quilt

Douglass’ Kansas Color Light Artillery Battery (Union) Soldiers

In spring 2011, quilt artist Marla Jackson worked with ninth-graders to create a quilt picturing a group of soldiers from the first infantry of African American troops during the Civil War.

The quilt is featured in an exhibition called The First Colored Troops of Kansas at the Spencer Museum of Art in Lawrence. Several of Jackson's quilts will also be on display in the Lobby Gallery until September 18, 2011.

Marla will be the speaker at our October 17th and 18th meeting, where her topic will be
"Visual Literacy."
