February First Step Quilts

The snow days contributed to a bumper crop of First Step Quilts. Fourteen completed quilts were donated this month, along with 5 tops. Here are a few we'll deliver to the kids.

Linda Frost used up scraps to make this one, isn't it a great design? It measures 46" x 40". The pieced strips are 2" wide, the solid strips are 4 1/2" wide.

Connie Hadl donated this - simple, quick and a sweet quilt. One side is cotton, one side is soft fleece. She stitched it together pillowcase style and tied it to finish. It measures 34" x 42".

Pam Avara donated this cheerful little quilt from her collection. She donated another quilt made for a challenge several years ago.

Nancy Almstrom donated this all flannel quilt - the blocks are 5 1/2" square.

Karen Warner's 33" x 36" quilt features a bold animal print. She also turned it pillowcase style, then quilted it.

Betty Wright went wild, she donated 5 quilts and 2 tops. This top is in the traditional brick pattern.

The rest of Betty's quilts were made with brightly colored 6" squares.

Joyce Wolf stitched a top (now being quilted) as she recuperated from eye surgery.

Someone slipped this pretty quilt in my bag, I am not sure who did. I'd love to know!

Another First Step quilt

Here is Quilt #8 for January, created by Linda Frost.

Linda said she found this fabric in a sale bin and couldn't pass it up. This could be a fine new excuse for NOT passing up sale fabric. You can always exclaim: "Why, I can make a quilt for the kids at First Step."
This quilt measures 50" x 41". Both sides are cotton.

p.s. Remember, you can donate tops only! The easily distracted Deb Rowden has made 2 tops so far. She's had no luck getting them to the machine to quilt but guess what? That is not a problem! We have several quilters who have volunteered to quilt these quilts. Keep that in mind, you can bring tops to the February meeting to pass on to one of those volunteers.

Barn Quilt

Sheryl L sent these photos of a barn quilt her husband painted and hung on their barn near Topeka. She chose the Carpenter's Wheel pattern.

He painted it on a board and then called in all his favors to get it up there using a pulley.

First Step Quilts donated in January

Donating quilts for children with mothers in the DCCCA First Step program is a new KVQG project.

The requirements for these quilts are simple: size can vary as they are for preschool kids of all ages, and they should include batting. Here are our latest donations so you can see that different sizes and fabrics are just fine:

Sara Chappell donated this quilt made of leftover blocks from another quilt.

The pieced side is flannels, the backing is cotton. It measures 36" x 42".

Betty Wright donated this one - both sides are cotton.

She machine quilt it with decorative stitches. It measures 37" x 42".

Betty donated this quilt too, again made with all cotton fabric. It measures 34" x 34".

Barbara Brackman donated this top, Georgann Eglinski donated the flannel backing,

quilted and bound it. It measures 33" x 48".

Barbara and Georgann teamed up to finish this one too - it measures 41" x 41".

Some lucky little child will sleep with these Rocky Road to Kansas blocks,

also made by Barbara and Georgann. It is smaller, measuring 31" x 31".

What kid wouldn't love to nap with this quilt with tiny Chicago Cubs logos in the middle?

It's another by Barbara and Georgann, and measures 43" x 43".

Remember - you can donate just a top too. Several machine quilters have volunteered to quilt these quilts. We distributed donated fabric from Lorene Mosser and Barb Lynch at the January meeting too, and we'll have that fabric at upcoming meetings also.
