Barn Quilt

Sheryl L sent these photos of a barn quilt her husband painted and hung on their barn near Topeka. She chose the Carpenter's Wheel pattern.

He painted it on a board and then called in all his favors to get it up there using a pulley.

Quilters Newsletter maintains a registry of barn quilts here:

First Step Quilts donated in January

Donating quilts for children with mothers in the DCCCA First Step program is a new KVQG project.

The requirements for these quilts are simple: size can vary as they are for preschool kids of all ages, and they should include batting. Here are our latest donations so you can see that different sizes and fabrics are just fine:

Sara Chappell donated this quilt made of leftover blocks from another quilt. 

The pieced side is flannels, the backing is cotton. It measures 36" x 42".

Betty Wright donated this one - both sides are cotton. 

She machine quilt it with decorative stitches. It measures 37" x 42".

 Betty donated this quilt too, again made with all cotton fabric. It measures 34" x 34".

 Barbara Brackman donated this top, Georgann Eglinski donated the flannel backing, 

quilted and bound it. It measures 33" x 48".

Barbara and Georgann teamed up to finish this one too - it measures 41" x 41".

Some lucky little child will sleep with these Rocky Road to Kansas blocks, 

also made by Barbara and Georgann. It is smaller, measuring 31" x 31".

What kid wouldn't love to nap with this quilt with tiny Chicago Cubs logos in the middle? 

It's another by Barbara and Georgann, and measures 43" x 43".

Remember - you can donate just a top too. Several machine quilters have volunteered to quilt these quilts. We distributed donated fabric from Lorene Mosser and Barb Lynch at the January meeting too, and we'll have that fabric at upcoming meetings also.

It's an amazingly complex design.

 Barbara B drafted the blocks but Mary and Joyce figured out that set.

She's been an active KVQG member for years, taking on many offices and committees.

January Program

The program for the for January 17-18 meetings is our own Linda Frost. Linda will share
how her quilts are inspired by current events and her travels to Guatemala, New Zealand, and Australia in "Inspirations from Down South."

Here's some of what she's written about herself:

Linda Frost has lived in Kansas her entire life and has resided in Lawrence for over 30 years. Looking for a creative outlet that would simultaneously fill her need to be both famous and reclusive, Linda decided that the world of quilting was for her.

Her work as been exhibited in galleries and quilt shows through out the country; including Houston’s Quilts, Inc. Festival, Paducah’s AQS show, and the Ontario Museum of History and Art. It has also been shown locally at the Alice C. Sabitini Art Gallery, the 1109 Gallery and the Lawrence Arts Center.

 “Patchwork Jayhawk”, a commission piece, was part of the “Jayhawks on Parade” in Lawrence, KS during 2003. In 2007, Linda was honored with the Phoenix Award for her work as an independent curator of textile exhibits and promotion of art quilts. Linda is currently working on a quilt book about a Kansas sampler quilt for the Kansas City Star Books to celebrate Kansas’s Sesquicentennial.

Many, many “thank yous” go out to all KVQG members! With everyone’s support and hard work, ours is one of the best guilds in the whole country. If prizes could be given, everyone would receive a special prize for their support. Special thanks to all of our our board members and to those who hold chair positions for all of the extra work and time that it takes to make our guild special. All it takes is attending a single meeting to see how talented our members are and to give us a sense of pride. Be sure to take a workshop in 2011, learn new skills, and get to know your fellow guild members.


Everyone has a different story to tell and skills to share. Bring a friend to a meeting and let them in on our secrets! See you all in January when we will welcome Linda Frost as our first speaker of the new year! Cheers to a wonderful holiday and new year!

VNA loves the ricebags

Thanks to all who contributed to the ricebags for VNA. A few of us met at Sammie Messick's house last week and filled them and stitched them closed.
