Textile Art Installation Opens at the Spencer

Conversation with the Artists

In response to an invitation from the Spencer Museum of Art, Ann Hamilton and Cynthia Schira have mined its encyclopedic holdings to create new works of art for the Central Court and adjoining galleries. The resulting exhibition, An Errant Line: Ann Hamilton / Cynthia Schira, reflects their distinctive contemplations of the Museum's legacy as well as the relation of the handmade to a world increasingly structured by the digital code of zeros and ones.

Schira's installation features sheer, woven, and mesh fabrics. It includes a monumental "word" cloth and ETYMON, woven on a computer-controlled Jacquard loom at the Oriole Mill, abstracted from selections obtained from the Spencer's online collection database.

In Ann Hamilton's work, ghostly figures line the walls of the Central Court, looking like puppets in a gestural drama. Transformed by the way an obsolete scanner "sees," the objects are drawn from the Spencer Museum's collection of Presepio, or nativity, figures, enlarged and digitally printed on Japanese Gampi paper bonded to cheesecloth. A shrouded grand piano awaits the touch of the hand to sound and play scales or songs that might serenade the silent figures.

Simon is an independent curator, writer, and arts administrator based in Paris who has written books on both Hamilton and Schira. She served as curator-at-large for the Whitney Museum of American Art from 2004-2009 and as managing editor of Art in America from 1974-1983.

Festival of Trees: Quilted Donations

 

 

The annual Festival of Trees is scheduled for Monday to Thursday, November 26 to the 29th at Liberty Hall in downtown Lawrence. It's a fundraiser for The Shelter.

The Sunflower Ladies Quilt Bee of KVQG is donating the quilt above with its tree and snowman. Members: Angela Barton, Florence Gilliland, Ginny Short, Mary Kay Chandler, Beverly Kipp, Barbara Lynch. Our Prez Lori Kukuk donated her quilting skills toward the project.

And Linda Frost is donating this quilt London Holly.

 

You have all week to admire the quilts (and the trees) and you can buy one or two at the auction on Tuesday night November 27.

2013 KVQG Opportunity Quilt

 

One of our small groups the Sewhatevers who meet on Thursday mornings donated the fundraising quilt for 2012-2013.

The box of batiks seems to be used up.

 

It's all made out of batiks from their collections, quite a diverse scrapbag of color, color and color.

 

First they made a lot of square in a square blocks

Then they tried different settings.

And different sashings.

And did a remarkable job of joint decision making.

 

It was all pieced on paper foundations.

And then the paper had to come out.

 

Lori volunteered to machine quilt it

 

 

 

They bound it just in time to present it to the guild at the September retreat.

Some lucky quilt lover will go home with it after the September 2013 retreat.

Kris Has a Show at Harper's Fabrics

Machine quilter Kris Barlow's quilts are on view this month at Harper's in Overland Park.

Here's what she says in their newsletter:

Since I was very young I have been making and remaking things to decorate myself and my environment. I have had minimal formal art training but am naturally drawn to color, texture, line and form. I have spent my life learning and exploring traditional crafts and fine art. I combine these skills to create art, both wearable and decorative that is whimsical, colorful and original. I have designed in many mediums from metals to fiber, though my latest love is quilting. Currently, I divide my time between working as an AutoCad drafter for Westar Energy and my business as a longarm quilter, quilting for others as well as myself.

 

     I approach each quilt on an individual basis. I am not known to be a practical longarm quilter, nor am I an efficient quilter. My goal is not to get through each quilt without picking up my needle, but to give each quilt its due. I like to live with a quilt top for a few days… looking, pondering and waiting until inspiration hits. It usually comes at a time that I am least expecting it, then I can start the actual quilting.

Ilyse's Book is Done

She's been working with Kansas City Star books to do a pattern book.

 

She had help from a few other KVQG members.
